Training for a career

Telecommunications Training
Get a head start on your career with a comprehensive training program for Telecommunications Equipment Installers. Central office installers set up switches, cables, and other equipment in central offices. Central Offices (CO) are facilities that major communication companies operate to manage and maintain networks. These CO’s are the hubs of the telecommunication network-they contain the switches, routers and other equipment that directs information throughout the telephone network. To install switches, routers and other equipment, installers connect the equipment to power lines, communications cables and install frames and supports. They test the connections to ensure that adequate power is available and that the communication links function. They also install equipment such as power systems and alarms.

Telecommunications equipment installers generally work in clean, well-lit, air- conditioned surroundings, such as a telephone company’s central office.

This program includes formal classroom training as well as hands-on training with communications equipment. As networks have become more sophisticated, often including equipment from a variety of manufacturers, the knowledge needed for installation and maintenance also has increased. This fast-growing and demanding career is at the center of the telecommunications industry. Opportunities become available for central office installers as the growing popularity of the Internet, expanded multimedia offerings such as video on demand, and other telecommunications services continue to place additional demand on telecommunications networks. These new services require high data transfer rates, which can only be achieved by installing new optical switching and routing equipment. Extending high-speed communications from central offices to customers also will require the installation of more advanced switching and routing equipment.
